Seeing Demons: Inside the Wild, Unpredictable High of Psilocybe baeocystis
The chemistry says two compounds are responsible.
A friend recently told me about a Halloween night in Seattle when he and a buddy ate wild “Blue Runners” (Psilocybe baeocystis). Earlier that week, his friend had found them while foraging and identified them using a psychedelic mushroom field guide. Before they ate them, he told my friend that these mushrooms were supposed to be exceptionally potent. Both had plenty of psychedelic experience under their belts, so neither expected the trip to be much different from the many they’d had before.

About thirty minutes after eating them, the warning proved justified. My friend told me that the trip came on with startling intensity. The visuals quickly became so overwhelming that he felt trapped inside them, moving from one hallucination to the next without any way to slow them down. The walls melted. An intense sensation surged through his body, as if his soul were trying to tear itself free or something inside him were separating. He turned to his friend and asked if he was hallucinating as intensely. His friend quietly replied that he was, then laid down on the couch and stared at the ceiling while Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon played on repeat.
Then the ceiling opened.
He remembers vomiting as adrenaline surged through his body. Looking up, he watched a swirling, portal-like opening form in the ceiling before demons began descending through it. One crossed the room, stared him down, and touched his face. Years later, he still describes it as the most intense trip he has ever experienced—horrifying, overwhelming, and terrifyingly realistic.
Maybe it was just the set and setting. It was Halloween night. The music, the atmosphere, and the expectation that these mushrooms were unusually strong could all have shaped his experience. But the intensity of the trip—and the reputation P. baeocystis has earned among experienced foragers—made me wonder whether there was something unique about the mushroom itself.
That question sent me down the rabbit hole of its chemistry.
